Which poem have you chosen to memorize? Why did you choose the poem? How do you feel about public speaking? Are you good at memorization? What do you plan to do to make your presentation unique?

I choose the poem by William Wordsworth, it doesn’t have a title. I honestly choose this poem because its short but I can still at least get an A. I hate public speaking with a passion. My voices shakes and I start to stutter which is so embarrassing. Then, my voice sounds weird against the awkward silence in the room. I’m good at visual memorization. If I have a vocabulary test I can easily remember what word fits with what definition. But, memorizing a poem is a different story. In 10th grade, we had to memorize a part in Macbeth. I really studied it and I thought I knew it. When I got in front of the class though, I totally bombed and I was really upset. I’m not really trying to do anything special with this poem because I really wouldn’t know what to do. I’m just trying to get this project over with.

Many of our favorite movies follow the heroic cycle. For this blog, choose a movie that follows the heroic cycle and identify the following:
  1. The original "home" (young, innocent, immature)
  2. The separation (the call to adventure)
  3. The initiation (the road of trials)
  4. The return

The Heroic Cycle in Girl Interrupted. The home: The main character 19 year old Susanna feels that she is suffocating in the life she is living. She was living recklessly and didn’t care about life. The Separation: The doctors suggest to her parents that she should be committed into Claymore Hospital, a mental institution after combining a bottle of aspirin and a bottle of vodka thinking it was a suicide attempt. She heavily denies that she tried to commit suicide. The doctors diagnosed her with Borderline Personality Disorder. She befriends the band of troubled women in her ward and falls under the hypnotic sway of Lisa, the wildest and most hardened of the bunch. The initiation: Together, the two run away and visit a friend named Daisy who was mistakenly released from the mental facility as a result of her father's financial pull. Daisy is emotionally fragile and desperately insecure. She agrees to let Suzanna and Lisa spend the night at her place even though Lisa berates Daisy. In the morning Suzanna discovers Daisy dead in the bathroom. Daisy was pushed over the edge by Lisa's cruelty, and so hung herself. Suzanna calls the cops and Lisa flees, later to be caught and returned to the facility in a nearly catatonic state. Suzanna is sad for Lisa. Suzanna tries to maintain a friendship but Lisa turns on her by luring her down to the basement and violently attacking her. Suzanna stands up to Lisa by rallying the other girls in her own defense. Lisa backs down and Suzanna decides to pursue her own treatment more seriously. The return: Susanna is released the next day. Before she leaves, she visits Lisa and talks to her again; telling her that she will get out and that she must come and see her. As Susanna leaves, she says goodbye to all her friends, giving Polly her adopted cat Ruby and reconciling with Georgina. At the end of the film, Susanna states that by the 1970s, most of her friends were released. (She changed her life around and helped most of the girls see the potential they had inside of them to get out of the mental hospital. Very heroic!!)

Did you have difficulty criticizing a peer's post on Blog 2.1 or complimenting a peer's post on Blog 2.2? Are people more comfortable criticizing or complementing in general? What does this reveal about our culture? society? individuals?

Use your experience with the last two blogs to investigate our reaction to others' thoughts and statements
.

I kind of had a hard time criticizing my peer’s movie list. It’s hard to criticize someone else’s opinion because I don’t want anyone to be mad at me. It was easier complimenting the Joke Blogs. For me I like complimenting better than criticizing and I think a lot of other kids feel that way too. Our society is making us be accepting of other people’s opinions. No one likes to be in conflict and to debate. It also depends on where people grow up. I feel has very humble students. If that person grew up in Bayshore where all the girls are stuck up, there mentality is ‘I can say whatever I what because I’m better than all of you.’ So they wouldn’t have had a problem criticizing their peer blogs

Knowing a good clean joke is important. Write one clean joke and compliment someone who wrote a funny joke.

1. Explain the meaning of each of the following quotes and explain how each SPECIFICALLY applies to an assignments from the first quarter.

  • “It’s not a problem until it’s a problem; then, it’s a problem.”
  • KISMET: “Keep It Simple Manageable and Efficient Throughout."
  • “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
  • “GITERDUN”
2. Does your numeric grade on gradebookwizard reflect your performance in this class? Why or why not?

3. Which assignment/ lesson from the class taught you the most and why?

4. Are you selfish or an altruist? Defend your answer with a "quote" from Ayn Rand's introduction.

5. Rewrite the following Works Cited entry in proper MLA format.

1. “It’s not a problem until it’s a problem; then, it’s a problem.” This quote went well with the headline project because I didn’t have a camera or the time take a good cover picture. I didn’t think it was a problem before because I didn’t need it. • “Gitterun” The blogs. It is better to just do the blogs and get them over with than to just wait until 11:30 pm on Sunday • “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” The resume best represents this quote because when you enter high school you should have a plan of how you are going to spend your time productively. People that didn’t plan to do anything their high school career will fail because have nothing on their resume. • KISMET: “Keep It Simple Manageable and Efficient Throughout." Unobtainium: Obtaining 'Em is a good example of this saying. If the teams bought fewer materials but still made the product really good then they would have saved a lot of money. They would have probably made a lot of money too. 2. I think the numerically grade reflects my performance in the class because I do all my work on time and efficiently. 3. The assignment that has taught me the most is when we were working on the resume because that is what I really needed the most help with. I think that is most important since I am applying to colleges and started to go into the work force I needed to learn how to that correctly. 4. I think I am more selfish than altruist so I am selfish. In Ayn Rand’s book she says “Selfishness is concern with one’s own interests” and I care about my self more than anyone else. 5. Find a fact and opinion from one article that supports a position that is opposite of your own.

FACT: Quote something from your site that is factual.

Opinion: "We want to see a general assembly in every backyard, on every street corner because we don't need Wall Street and we don't need politicians to build a better society."

Works Cited: Jones, Bobby. "Protestors Upsetting Local Residents." The New York Times 24 October 2011: A3. Print.

My Opinion: Provide a thoughtful, original comment about the situation in lower Manhattan.

Fact: Occupy Wall Street jumped on the bandwagon only recently, encamping in a Lower Manhattan park in late September, just a block away from the symbolic home of their perceived enemies. Opinion: That lack of organization and an articulated set of goals has led to skepticism that the movement can gain sustained momentum, as well as criticism that a significant faction of the Occupy Wall Street protesters are nothing more than gadflies, dilettantes and ne’er-do-wells. Works Cited: Prial, Dunstan. “Occupy Wall Street, Tea Party Movements Both Born of Bank Bailouts.” foxbusiness.com, 20 October 2011. Web. 11 October 2011 My Opinion: I think the government needs to stop being greedy and actually do something about all the jobless people out there. All they care about is money and they have too much money to care about money. The people without jobs are the people that really need to worry about money.

The protest on Wall Street has been described as a battle between the 99% and the 1%. Research the protest to find one fact, and one opinion on the subject. Be sure to include the author, title of the article, source of the article, medium of publication, and date you accessed the research. Then, explain which side you agree with and why. Use the format below to complete your blog. The response will be to disagree with one of your peer's opinions using the research you've found to support your position.

“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” -Coco Chanel Fashion is everything to me. I live breath and eat it. My mind is always thinking about fashion, I wake up thinking about it and I go to sleep dreaming about it.

"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity" - Albert Einstein

Technology is supposed to make our lives easier. In many ways it does. However, in other ways, technology has made life more complicated. Imagine a year of your life without technology of any kind. How would your life be different? What would you do with your time that you spent using technology? Would you be happier? Would you be bored?

I NEED my technology. I can’t live without my cell phone, computer, and i-pod. It has become a part of this generation’s everyday life. We use it for communication, entertainment, school, research and work. If it was taken away from us then society will go crazy and chaotic. I went one day without my i-pod and I thought I was going to die. I was uneasy and my hands were shaking, I need my music. But, I think technology is a major distraction in our lives. If we didn’t have it then we would be more focused and productive. Also I think that families would spend more time together and children would spend more time playing outside. But, I still wouldn’t give up my gadgets, they are too important

An individual's success is rarely achieved individually. Often, success is the cumulative effect of making the right choices. Along the way, there are others who help us make those 'right choices.' Who has helped you, inspired you, motivated you, or in any other way, played a part in your decision making to achieve the successes you have to this point in your life?

Write a blog in the form of a thank you letter to a specific individual who has influenced your decision making process that has brought you to where you are today, or has inspired you to be something more.

Dear ________,

Body of letter...

Sincerely,

Your Name

Dear Mom,
I love you so much. You are the best mother in the world. You are always understanding and you never doubt my abilities. You support me in everything I do and I am so blessed to have you in my life. You have taught me I can do anything in life and I really appreciate that. Even when I doubt myself and don’t believe in myself, you always push me to keep going. You are an amazing person to talk to and a good listener. You have taught me very valuable lessons that I can apply to my life when I get out on my own. You are like my best friend and I can’t see being in this world without you.
