Listen In Between the Lines
The short story on this page was an assignment for my Senior English class, Tech Prep 12. It was completed in about two weeks. Some of the goals for this assignment were to listen to conversations of our friends and write down whaterever you hear. You cannot speak during this conversation and it was to be a minute long.
“Love Triangle”
By: Kayla Johnson
Without the 80 choir members the room seemed much bigger. A boy was practiced the piano really intently. Also, a girl chased another girl and echoes of stretching noises from girls trying practice their music. One kid in the corner rested on 5 chairs with his hood over his head. A group of friends sat in the middle of the room and the smell of Chinese food filled the air. All the way in the back of the room a boy and a girl sat together.
“You’re driving me crazy,” he mumbled under his breath.
“What?” she said distractedly. She was holding up a round hand mirror to me face intensely studying her looks.
“Nothing.”
“Anyway, we need to talk about this.”
“I thought that was what we were talking about,” he yelled. “And stop freakin’ looking in the mirror for one second!”
“Don’t be mad babe,” she giggled. She cuddled up next to him and tried to kiss him but he turned his face away. She stared at him with narrow eyes and then forcefully grabbed his face and pulled it into hers to kiss him. He didn’t turn away this time.
“Eww guys get a room,” the short boy with the red converses jokingly said.
“Shut up!” the girl joked back to him.
“Shut up your face.”
“Shut up your face.”
“Oh my god both of you guys shut up. Red, I’m trying to talk to my girl privately here,” the boy demanded.
“Whoa chill out dude,” Red said and walked back to his group of friends.
“Now can we please talk?” he pleaded with her.
“You know what, this doesn’t seem like a very good time to talk,” she said.
“But you just said we need to talk about this a few seconds ago.”
“I know but…”
“But nothing. I’m I’m,” he stampeded, “whatever.”
“See why you always have to get like that for?” she whined “I’ll call you tonight.”
“Yeah like last time right?”
“Why do you always have to bring that up I told you what happened.”
“Well how do you think I feel? I don’t think you care.”
“Hey where is the love guys? You two are usually slobbing each other’s faces,” Red said.
“Why are you in our conversation!” the girl yelled.
“Well quite frankly my dear, everyone is in your conversation right now. I mean you guys are talking loud enough.”
“See this is why I didn’t want to talk now,” the girl whispered to the boy.
“Yeah alright,” he sighed. He ran his hands onto his face, through his hair and then behind his head. He leaned back and looked around the room. “I’m gonna get umm, I’m gonna get something from my locker.” He got up and walked out of the room.
“Yo does he know what you really want to talk to him about?” Red asked. He sat down next to her and brushed her hair out of her face.
“No. Well I’m not really sure,” the girl wondered.
“You know you have to tell him soon right?”
“Yeah, I know but I don’t want to hurt him.”
“He’s gonna get hurt either way.”
“Ugh,” she huffed. She started to walk away but Red took her hand and kissed it. The he caressed her cheek.
“It’s gonna be alright though,” He assured her and gave her a big smile. They started to lean into each other just as the door opened. The boy came back empty handed and stop dead in the doorway to see the position Red and his girl together. He shook his head and walked back out the door. The girl ran after him and let the door slam behind her. At this point everyone stopped everything they were doing feeling the tension in the air.
“Okay so what just happened,” someone asked Red.
“I don’t know but yo, you got anymore rib tips though?”
